Community Webmaster Asks Mayor To Stop Pretending
Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 10:22:38 -0500 Copy of email to Mayor Schmoke
Mr. Mayor:
Since no amount of hue & cry from the citizens of Baltimore will stop you
from getting what you (Paterakis?) want, I would suggest you at least stop
pretending that the average citizen of the city has even a marginal voice at
City Hall.
Several of your rather lame arguments center around who has approved of the
Wyndam plan:
Hundreds show up to protest at a City Council Meeting, and your response is
to introduce two bills that essentially take away any public debate or
oversight from the council.
By the way, I did the math....800+/- permanent jobs @ the Wyndam divided by
$50 million = $62,500+ per job!!! Now I'm sure that the Wyndam is a great
place to work, but it seems to me that most of the jobs created will be
menial, low paying ones that will do little, if anything for the economy of
the city. I would submit to you that if you wish to spend $50 mill of our
money to spur economic development, I think giving $60k each to 800 city
residents would do more! Or you could use the $50 mil to hire new city
employees that do not believe the citizens are the enemy, and that prefer to
actually work for their money.
And finally, to address the proximity issue of the Wyndam, both you and H&S Development keep saying that there would exist other forms of
transportation (water taxi, shuttle buses, etc) available to whisk a
conventioneer to the Convention Center in a matter of minutes....well, sir,
perhaps it's time you got out of your limo & tried to get from Inner Harbor
East to the Convention Center between 8am and 9am (and you must do it in the
rain w/two display boards & a briefcase under your arm!)... in short, it
can't be done!
Thank You
