Seaman's Hall -
802 S. Broadway
This building was the site of the first local longshoreman's union in
1912. Fells Point unions played a dramatic role in the 1936 Seamen's
Strike. Ringleader Paddy Whalen organized the Midnight March of the
Baltimore Brigade. Sriking seamen from other ports joined in a night
walk through the rain to picket the Department of Commerce and the
Capitol in Washington. The march contributed to the creation of the
National Maritime Union (1937) that eventually won better pay, shorter
hours, and a union hiring hall for seaman.
