This public market survives in the area of its founding in the 1780s. Thus, the market predates the official chartering of Baltimore City. The market sheds have been reconstructed repeatedly -- at one time they extended all the way to the waterfront. Up until the 1920s on market days, activity spilled out into the streets around the sheds.
