George Wells House - Northwest Corner of Bond & Thames Streets
On the eve of the American Revolution, the Continental Congress ordered the first ship of its navy, the Virginia, to be constructed by shipwright George Wells at his yard across from this home. Bond Street was then in the heart of Fells Point. Wells' yard was just one of dozens of shipyards that operated on the Point between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. They turned out hundreds of sailing vessels, including the signature topsail schooners that helped win the War of 1812 for the infant nation.
