Moved only four miles up the road to Parkville. From the time of my christening to my 25th birthday, my mom would buy my birthday cakes at Vilma on Belair Road or their sister store Steiffel's on Harford Road. They were so good. They also had a cake called a Normandy cake which was just one layer of yellow cake with a cinnamon/powdered sugar topping. When I was a kid it cost 10 cents. By the time the bakeries closed it was $1.10. It was the BEST CAKE ever. I would eat the enire cake myself.
Anyhow, does anyone have any information regarding those bakeries and possibly getting the recipe for the Normandy cake. This is about my employment at the BTC. My first job was working in the shops on Washington Blvd. and then in the shop on Oldham st. in Highlantown. In mid 1960 I was layed off and then was called back as a streetcar operator on the #8 line. When the streetcars were removed I switched to busses where I worked the 10, 13, 20, 21, 22, and 23 lines. Also the line that ran from Cherry Hill, I believe, to Reiserstown up Pennsylvania Ave. It has been over 40 years since then so I am having a problem remembering. I know that at the time the #10 ran from Sparrows Point to Roland Park and I think the #13 ran from Park Heights to Walbrook Junction??? also the #20 ran from Dundalk to downtown??. A map of the lines today shows all together different routs. I would appreciate any help that a former employee or a Baltimorian, can give me on the start and end of the above routs. Also I would enyoy hearing from any former employees from that period that worked out of the Oldham St. barn and took there break in the pool hall on Eastern Ave & Oldham St.

Oftimes on a saturday we would take our wagon and walk around the tracks below the Hill
and pick up iron scraps and search for old pieces of copper and newspapers to take to the
junk yard on Cross Street. After being paid for our work [about .10 to .15 cents], we would
head for the bakery and get a bag of cake scraps for a nickel. We could also buy a big bottle
of soda for another nickel. Then we would sit on the curb and enjoy our days work. After that we
might go down to the docks and swim for a few hours, or until we were chased away. Great fun
in the hot summertime. Sometime we would to the Cross Street market and swipe some fruit.
The market people would yell at us but that's about all. Had a job at the market one summer. Work
began at 5:00 a.m. An old farmer named Mr. Schmidt had a produce stand and when I asked if he
needed help, he hired me at the royal sum of .50 a day.I also received a free lunch. My job was to
help keep the stand stocked with produce. At about 11:00 o'clock Mr. Schmidt would give me the
money to go to the Deli. counter and get some lunch meat. His wife always brought bread from home
that she had made the day before and with a few tomatoes and some lettuce from the stand, we would
have a fine lunch. We always drank spring water from the farm. At the end of the day, around 6:OO o'clock
we had to take the stand down and put it in the basement of a store. After that was done we had to load
the old model "T" truck with the produce we still had. That usually took about an hour and I can tell you, I was
worn out at the end of the day. They were really great people, taught me alot and left me with many fine memories.
All for now, I'll come back soon. Thanks for allowing me to ramble. -Monday, April 12, 1999 at 21:54:54 (EDT)Bill Burke burkewe@northstate.net Trinity, NCUSA * A Search Engine * During the 1930's as a kid I remember a cake bakery on south Light St. near Federal Hill.

studies in the field of history. I find the subject as a whole rather interesting, although I spent a good deal of my time at the university involved in extracurricular
activities, which is the subject of this comment. I am involved in a group of young men who enjoy gathering on friday and saturday nights to discuss ancient texts
of those great old Greek figures; a few personal favorites of mine include Aeschylus and Herodotus. Those Greeks really knew what they were talking about
and I fear that today we "gen-Xer's" are not aware of the contribution that these men and their works make to society. I need more people to join my little group, as
of now I am the only member operating out of my one-room apartment. It gets lonely here. Especially at night. Especially on the weekends, I just want a little comfort
and love, which I know the Greek-lovers of Baltimore could provide. -Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at 01:04:54 (EST)Elaine Hamet Kaye bubbiekayw1@juno.com HOuston, TXUSA * Word of Mouth * Really miss Balmer people, the harbor and Fells Point, but not enough to leave Houston, Tx where it was 75 degrees today. I remeber the riots of 1968 when at the age of 5 years old I watched the national guard chase people down the streets. I remember having to protest the courts and city hall for equal treatment for Afrikans of the city. All in all it was what make America a little more livable, people that once stood for something and accepted nothing but the best.
Today the communities of ,Upton, Sandtown and Druid Heights are all dumps with community people that don't know anything and continue to boast their titles as, Executive Directors of crack, heroine, violent, opportunistic blood sucking leaders that follow instead of lead. -Tuesday, March 09, 1999 at 19:17:06 (EST)Bill E. Burke burkewe@Northstate.net Trinity, NCUSA * A Search Engine * I remember Baltimore of the 1930's. Raised in South Baltimore. Worked at the Southway Bowling Center. I can remember more than once setting up pins for 120 games
on evenings work. Seems like we received three cents per game and it was really hard work for us kids. We ranged in age from 12 yrs. and up. We worked from about
5 in the evening to about 1:30 the next morning. We would set pins on 2 lanes at a time. On occasion we would set 3 lanes at a time. In the summertime we would go the
harbor at the bottom of Federal Hill and swim. It's now called the inner harbor. In those days the boats would come in from the Eastern shore loaded with watermelon and
cantaloupe. We would swim out from the piers and yell at the men on the boat and they would throw watermelon and cantaloupe trying to hit us. All we cared about was
getting the melons to eat. I can remember sitting at the street corner and singing with the gang. That is a grand memory. Sometime we would walk down to Fort Mchenry
were we could fish. Coming home we sometimes hooked a ride on the back of the trolley car. When the car stopped, thecoin collector man would get off and chase us.
Then we had to wait till the trolley started again so we might ride. Lots of times we just walked. There weren't very many automobiles around in those days. Airplanes were
kinda rare also. If a plane flew over, everyone would look up and point to the plane. The inner harbor at that time was lined on the Light Street side by Piers and large sheds,
where the boats would come in to load and unload. The McCormick building was just across the street from the docks. Lots of train track ran down Light street down past
Federal hill. This is the most I have rambled on about home for a long time. I'm from the L.A. area and have just put up a bulletin board site to list restaurant recommendations from around the country from local residents. I thought this would be useful for me, my friends, and anyone else to find out about good places to go to when we're on business trips or vacations. Once I was in New Orleans with a friend and we made the mistake of asking some guy on the street where to eat, and instead of telling us a name, he wanted us to follow him. After a while, we tried to leave, but then he followed us and expected us to pay him a tip!
So I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would post their recommendations of places you would take your friends or visitors to Please include a brief description on why you would recommend the restaurant, and location or contact information (that would be understandable by non-locals). Oh and you don't need to put an e-mail address for the message to be posted.
Thanks!
